Rocky statue dressed in rival gear ahead of Eagles, Commanders showdown
PHILADELPHIA - Did Commanders fan just invoke an infamous Philly curse? We'll soon find out!
What we know:
The Rocky statue was found dressed in Redskins gear just days before the Eagles face off against the Commanders in the NFC Championship at Lincoln Financial Field on Sunday.
The Philly icon was decked out head-to-toe in everything from a scarf, flag, jackets and a sign reading, "Yo, Adrian, HTTC," which means "Hail to the Commanders."
By Sunday morning, all the rival gear had been taken down with just hours to go until kickoff.
SportsRadio 94WIP posted a video of Rocky before he was restored to his former glory with the caption, "We all know how this ends."
The backstory:
Dressing the Rocky statue in the opposing teams' gear has become a tradition ahead of important Eagles games over the past several years. However, the outcome has always been a win for the Eagles:
- 2017 NFC Championship: Eagles win 38-7 against the Vikings
- Super Bowl LII: Eagles win 31-33 against the Patriots
- 2022 Divisional Round: Eagles win 37-7 against the Giants
- 2022 NFC Championship: Eagles win 31-7 against the 49ers
In 2023, Travis Kelce pleaded with Kansas City Chiefs fans not to dress Rocky ahead of that year's Super Bowl, which ended with an Eagles defeat.
Will the tradition remain in the Eagles' favor this time?
What they're saying:
Some fans have issued a warning, saying "It’s as simple as not disrespecting the Rocky statue, but they’ll soon learn."
While others are speculating that an Eagles fan could be responsible.
"I’m quite sure you did that. Or some Eagles fan. Us true Commanders fans don’t condone nor support this," one Commanders fan wrote.
