16 year NJ State Police horse vet has died

A New Jersey State Police horse has died, officials announced Monday evening.

Officials took to Facebook to post the sad news.

Today, we are deeply saddened to announce the passing of our beloved horse, Sprout. For the past 16 years, Sprout...

22-year-old Sprout was a part of the force for 16 years.

As part of his duties, he entertained both children and adults alike at class graduations, picnics, and community events.

He also acted as the riderless horse during times of loss, able to be seen in the cemetery in the distance, honoring fallen troopers.

Sprout's first NJ State Police event was walking in the Memorial Day Parade in Farmingdale in 2000.

Sprout was owned and cared for by Lt. Ted Schaffer and his family.
