80-year-old woman escapes after roof collapses in Logan

The owner of a local bar is lucky to be alive after the roof collapsed with her inside.

80-year-old Jean Wilson says she's been working and living in Sparky's Clubhouse for over 40 years until the roof came crashing down while she was inside.

"I was there when it happened, yeah," Wilson told FOX 29 Friday morning "It sounded like a hurricane".

"I said come on, you gotta get out of here," Tyrone Watson said.

Watson used to come to this old neighbor bar for years. On Friday, he happened to come by to check on his friend Jean Wilson. He took one look inside and pulled her from the building.

"She could have been killed. She could have been killed. I could have been killed going in there," Watson told fox 29.

"When I heard the crack coming up, ya know," Wilson recounted.

Wilson and Watson say heavy rains over the past few days or a broken water pipe may have brought down the roof on the aging building in the 1500 block of Belfield in Logan. The roof collapsed into the interior of the old tavern where Wilson was staying.because she has no place else to go.

"She needs help. She really does need a lot of help," Watson explained.

L&I visited the site Friday and slapped a violation notice on the front door because of the roof collapse. The building has been cited for violations in the past. It sits right next to a daycare center.

"They said don't go in," Wilson added.

"She's a senior citizen," Watson said. "She's an old lady and she needs help."

Red Cross officials did offer to help Wilson relocate. The building is unsafe to occupy at this point. Jean Wilson isn't sure what she'll do next or where she'll go.
