9-year-old girl killed after being struck and dragged by school bus she just got off

A nine-year-old girl was killed after being hit and dragged by a school bus she had just gotten off, police said.

Her aunt, Katelyn Gamelli, told InsideEdition that the young girl, Summer Steele, was the flower girl in her wedding over the summer.

Massachusetts police said the accident occurred in Plainfield at 4 p.m. Friday when Summer was being dropped off at her stop.

Police said after a preliminary investigation that they determined the girl was not fully clear from the bus when the door closed and she was caught in the door as the bus driver began to drive away.

Multiple other children were on the bus at the time of the accident, police said.

"Summer was my cousin's daughter. We are a very close family. She was an amazing smart beautiful little girl, she loved sports and dancing, and was definitely going to go places in life," said Gamelli.

Summer attended Sanderson Academy, according to reports, and Superintendent Michael Buoniconti released a statement about the death.

"While the investigation of this tragedy takes place, our school community is focusing on supporting one another," he said. "Our hearts go out to the family suffering this terrible terrible loss."

The bus driver is being interviewed police and it's not clear if any charges will be brought.

Summer's family has started a GoFundMe to help with funeral expenses.
