Atlanta woman celebrates 100th birthday

A Georgia woman celebrated her 100th birthday on Monday.

Mrs. Tyree Anna Walters was born on October 10, 1916 in Columbus. She was the oldest of four and the only daughter of the late Oscar Thomas Jameson and Johnnie Rosebud Jones Jameson.

Walters moved to Atlanta with her family when she was just 1-year-old and grew up in the Summer Hill neighborhood. In 1934, she graduated from Booker T. Washington High School and went on to work at Ritten Barnes Manufacturing Company for the next 23 years.

Walters married Claude Burdell early in life and years later married Robert Walters Sr., who had three adult sons. Her second husband passed away suddenly and she never remarried.

Walters has been a faithful member of Allen Temple AME church since 1928 and joined Prince Hall 65 years ago.

Walters has six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

"Mrs. Tyree Walters is extremely proud and thankful that she has been blessed to live these 100 years," said a Prince Hall news release.

A special party is taking place in her honor on Saturday.
