Video game center torched during Philadelphia furniture store fire

A 2-alarm fire at a Philadelphia furniture store spread to adjacent businesses, including a soon-to-be opened video game center. Business owner Hiram Lebron said he envisioned the center being a safe place for people to escape the violence plaguing nearby Philadelphia neighborhoods.

Black smoke and flames erupted from a building in West Kensington Monday afternoon.

Fire crews were on the scene at North American Street and West Huntingdon Street in the Fairhill section just before noon.

SKYFOX was live as several crews worked to get the large 2-alarm fire under control.

Fire officials reported that nine employees who were inside the building escaped the fire without injuries. There were also no injuries to firefighters, who battled the blaze under thick humidity.

Several businesses within the same warehouse as the furniture have already been affected by the fire, including a gaming store that was set to open Tuesday.

"My main thing was to try to put the guns down and bring the controllers up because we’re suffering from all the violence in the city," store owner Hiram Lebron said.

Officials have yet to release any estimated damage costs, or possible cause for the fire.
