Funeral services announced for Philadelphia police lieutenant

PHILADELPHIA (FOX 29) - Funeral services have been announced for a Philadelphia police lieutenant who lost his battle with cancer Saturday morning.

Juan Perez, 49, was diagnosed with adrenal cancer last June. The 30-year veteran of the Philadelphia Police Department was most recently serving on the K-9 unit.

After Perez was diagnosed, he underwent unsuccessful surgery to remove the cancer. Further testing revealed that it had spread to his lungs, kidney and stomach.

Perez underwent chemotherapy and tried a number of different medications and experimental drugs during his battle.

Prior to his death, Perez was scheduled to see an adrenal cancer expert in Michigan, but his worsening condition caused doctors to prohibit travel. He was also instructed to stop chemotherapy, which left Perez in hospice care.

A viewing for Perez is scheduled for Friday from 6-9 p.m. at John F. Givnish Funeral Home on Academy Road in Northeast Philadelphia. A mass will be held at 10 a.m. the following day at Maternity BVM Church on Bustleton Avenue in Bustleton, followed by a burial Resurrection Cemetery in Bensalem.

Perez is survived by his wife, Diana, and their three children.
