Janitor gets standing ovation after performance at high school orchestra recital

When a Nebraska high school held their band instrumental concert, who knew that the school janitor would be the star of the show?

Roy Smith, who has been working at the high school for the last eight years, accompanied the Omaha Burke High School band and orchestra with a vocal performance of "A Change is Gonna Come" last Tuesday.

Student Services and Activities Director Jason Williams told InsideEdition.com that it is well known around the school that Smith can sing. In the many years that Smith has worked at the high school, he has regularly been invited to perform at school events.

But perhaps his most significant performances happen offstage.

Williams said that Smith is often seen singing in the hallways or sharing a song with a student having a rough day. He is especially comforting to the students who have special needs.

"I've been singing ever since I was 13 years old," Smith told InsideEdition.com. "I was the main attraction then."

Smith gave up his dreams to be a singer when he married at 21, despite having been offered a recording deal. He knew the process was expensive and lengthy, and he was not ready to take the risk.

These days, Smith mostly sings with gospel groups: "I sing a lot of spiritual songs now."

When the school band and orchestra realized that Smith was an excellent singer, they approached him to make an appearence at their Christmas show.

The one that was recently caught on tape was his third performance with the group.
