Military investigating fatal shooting of Marine on South Carolina base
BEAUFORT, S.C. (AP) - Military officials say they're investigating the shooting death of a 21-year-old Marine corporal from Maine in South Carolina, and say they have another Marine in custody.
The Naval Criminal Investigative Service is investigating the Friday fatal shooting of 21-year-old Cpl. Tyler Wallingford, of Standish, at the Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort in South Carolina.
A spokesman says Cpl. Spencer Daily has been detained in relation to the investigation.
Both Marines were aircraft ordinance technicians with the Marine Fighter Attack Training Squadron 501, based in Beaufort.
Details about the investigation were scarce Monday. It was unclear if Wallingford is represented by an attorney. The investigation itself was ongoing.
The Portland Press Herald reports Wallingford came from a family of firefighters, and worked with the Standish Fire Department while still in high school.
