Mother Jailed After 5-Year-Old Son Is Found Nearly Beheaded in Her Home: Cops

(INSIDE EDITION)- A California mother has been arrested after police say she was found in her home alongside her fatally wounded five-year-old son.

Maria Isabel Bautista De Lopez was arrested Tuesday on suspicion of murder at her San Bernardino home, police say.

The San Bernardino Sun reports the 46-year-old was discovered in a bedroom with her son, who'd been nearly decapitated in a scene police described in no uncertain terms as gruesome.

According to KTLA, the woman had suffered what appeared to be self-inflicted injuries and was hospitalized.

She was expected to survive the injuries, which authorities suspect could have been part of a murder-suicide attempt, reports the Sun.

Lopez was arrested at the hospital where she was treated.

Lopez had been living with her boyfriend for the last few years. Both the boyfriend and his father were taken in for questioning.

Neighbors said the family mostly kept to themselves, KTLA writes.

Online records indicate Lopez is inelgible for bail and being held at West Valley Detention Center. It's unclear if Lopez has yet entered a plea.
