New Jersey couple traveling to wedding killed in multi-vehicle accident in Berks County
BERKS COUNTY, Pa. (WTXF) - A New Jersey couple driving to their wedding died in a multi-vehicle crash on I-78 in Berks County Wednesday.
Pennsylvania State Police said a tractor trailer traveling westbound on I-78 couldn't slow down for traffic. The tractor trailer struck the vehicle the couple was traveling in. The collision set up a chain reaction accident and fire involving five tractor trailers and the one passenger vehicle.
Kathryn Schurtz, 35, from Fanwood, New Jersey and Joseph Kearney were traveling to their wedding in Pittsburgh when the accident occurred November 14.
The highway was completely shut down four hours Wednesday night as crews worked to extinguish the fire and clean up.
A funeral mass for Ms. Schurtz is scheduled for Tuesday, November 20 in Scotch Plains, New Jersey.
