New Jersey teacher accused of using racial slur in classroom
PENNS GROVE, N.J. (FOX 29) - A Penns Grove Middle School teacher is suspended after being accused of using a racial slur in class.
Tameka Turner is outraged. The mother of five says her 12-year-old daughter was in science class last week at Penns Grove Middle School when the teacher got frustrated with some students and used a racial slur.
"He walked away and said he's tired of dealing with these n-word and they all looked at each other in shock because of what they heard," she told FOX 29.
She says her daughter had to provide a statement that day and again Tuesday, but she's gotten nowhere with the school.
"I got no phone call after the incident. I think this is the most important time to call a parent," she said .
"I'm very upset. I'm very hurt. I'm very disappointed," parent Cassandra Brown said.
Brown says her son was not in the class in question but after discussing the incident told her that a particular teacher ignores him and doesn't answer his questions.
Now, she's wondering. "Then, I hear he used this word, so it makes the correlation. Okay, so this is why you weren't helping my child because that's how you feel?" she said.
Walter Hudson's daughter also attends the middle school and had friends in the class where the teacher allegedly used the racial slur.
Hudson says he attended Monday night's school board meeting to find out if the students are getting any emotion support or counseling but got few answers.
The superintendent says New Jersey prohibits them from commenting but they are aware of the allegations.
