NJ nonprofit helps students with affordable prom attire
CAMDEN, N.J. (FOX 29) - Prom season is almost here and, for some families, the pressure to get the perfect dress with all of the accessories just isn't feasible. But one New Jersey nonprofit is making sure those students can get what they need for the big day without busting their budgets.
Sixty-five local teenagers will already have a dress, shoes and jewelry by the end of Saturday for their prom, without a hole in their wallet.
For the 10th year, the MVP! Foundation held its annual PROMise Boutique prom fair. It provides donated, brand new prom gowns, accessories and shoes to students for their junior and senior prom for $25 or less. Its goal is to help families that may not have otherwise been able to afford the items.
Each student who signs up to attend the event gets a volunteer personal shopper to help them find the perfect dress.
"I came in wanting a gold dress, long and flowy and poofy, but I didn't expect to come and get this dress," says Samantha Scott, who was all smiles holding a beautiful blue dress with sequins. "It's so helpful. Going to other big places to find expensive dresses is a lot."
Founder of the MVP! Foundation, Dr. Sharon Scott, says the best part of the event is watching parents react to their child trying on "the dress."
"It's overwhelming. It's such a good feeling," Dr. Scott says. "It's a piece of hope for people in often dark situations."
The event, held inside a Camden County Community College building, also brings in representatives from the college and Rutgers Camden to provide information about college preparation, admissions, financial assistance and scholarships.
A professional makeup artist was on hand to give complimentary makeovers so the teens have an idea of what they can do on their own to get ready.
