Officer saves colleague's life -- with a kidney

Police officers have special bonds, like saving lives, but probably nothing like these two.

They're members of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department and one of them gave a kidney to save the other.

Dep. Kevin Aly had renal failure from underdeveloped kidneys and desperately needed of a donor.

His plight, including regular dialysis treatments, reached the ears of Sgt. Darrin Offringa, his former mentor.

The pair talked and realized they were the same blood type.

Then, Offringa asked if he could be the donor.

The four-hour surgery was a success, Offringa is recovering and Aly says he couldn't be more grateful.
