Philadelphia street named after teen killed in Pulse nightclub shooting

City leaders want to make sure a teen who died in the Orlando Pulse nightclub shooting last year is always remembered. A street sign was unveiled with Akyra Murray's name Saturday morning.

It was a small gesture with great meaning to a Southwest Philadelphia family as the 7300 block of Chelwynde Avenue is renamed Akyra Murray Way. The newly dedicated street sign honors the 18-year-old.

"We moved to this block when she was 18 months old and she lived here till her ending day," her mom, Natalie Murray, said. "It makes me feel great to know that she's being honored this way."

Murray had just graduated from West Catholic High School and was celebrating the achievement with family and friends in Florida when her life was violently cut short.

"I would say losing Akyra inspired me to go 10xs harder as a coach," Coach Beulah Osueke said.

Coach B of West Catholic says she will never be forgotten. She's remembered as a solid student and a star on the court. She was planning to attend college on a full basketball scholarship.

While a permanent street sign will forever honor this admirable young life, her legacy as a local leader will extend well beyond this block.
