Severe weather leaves trail of destruction in Cherry Hill

A line of severe storms rumbled across the Delaware Valley Friday, causing a tornado watch, damaging winds and heavy rain.

Luckily, this was just a passing shower for most in the region. But some endured downed trees and power outages.

In Cherry Hill, around 6 p.m., residents of one neighborhood swear they heard the earth shake.

"The entire house was shaking, my blinds were moving and I just heard a big wind and all my power went out," Brianna Alfonsi said.

On Mackin Drive, the rain and high wind leveled a tree and totaled a parked car.

"I was telling my wife that we can go out for dinner and she was like, "no we can't! There's a tornado watch!" and I said "There's no tornados in Cherry Hill,"" said one neighbor.

A short distance away, another tree fortunately fell away from a home on Rhode Island Avenue. Crews from Cherry Hill were quick to the scene to clean up.

"We saw a fire through the window across the street and came out to check on the fire and see this tree down," a homeowner said.

Behind the Crowned Plaza off Route 70, a massive tree sliced through a fence and cut off traffic. On the other side of Route 70, near the Garden State Pavilion on South Cornell Avenue, downed wires cut off traffic lights after a tree proved no match for the wind.

It didn't last long, but for those who felt the storm's wrath, some scary moments earlier this evening.

"It sounded like somebody was shaking the house. Just grabbing it and shaking it." a Cherry Hill resident said.
