Son, 22, arrested in fatal shooting of Camden woman

CAMDEN, NJ (WTXF) - Police in Camden County have arrested a man they say shot and killed his own mother Friday evening.

Around 5:40 p.m., police responded to the 1100 block of North 18 th Street for a report of a woman shot. When officers arrived on scene, they found Iris Sanchez, 38, suffering from a gunshot wound.

Sanchez was taken to Cooper University Hospital where she later died from her injuries.

Investigators identified the gunman as Pedro Mercado. Police 22-year-old suspect is Sanchez's son. Officers were able to take Mercado into custody around 8:00 p.m. near Haddon and Benson Strets.

The investigation is ongoing.
