Stuck drawbridge caused ‘a significant traffic situation'
Toms River, N.J. - UPDATE: The bridge is working again.
We have what police are calling "a significant traffic situation" for people heading to part of the shore.
The Toms River Police Department reports the Mathis Bridge is closed due to a problem that started at about 4pm.
It says "The drawbridge is stuck in the open position and cannot be closed to allow vehicular traffic to pass. There are very heavy traffic delays and detours are set up. There is no way to travel east into the Seaside Heights area."
They're urge drivers to avoid using Route 37 east in Toms River to go into Seaside Heights.
Instead, they suggest reaching the Barrier Island, Lavallette, Seaside Park, and Seaside Heights from towns north such as Brick and Point Pleasant.
Still, they warn that extra traffic is also causing delays.
Traffic can still flow west on Route 37 to leave the area but there are delays.
