Teen murder suspect who escaped from detention center captured

BRIDGETON, NJ (WTXF) - A teenage murder suspect who escaped from a youth detention Wednesday along with three others has been taken back into police custody.

Investigators say "information" led them to the apartment where Thursday afternoon those inside kicked at the door and screamed nonsense at reporters. Michael Huggins was the last of the four suspects to be captured when he was taken into custody on Thursday morning. The three other teens who escaped from the detention center were captured on Wednesday.

"He did in fact have a gun in his possession and we are investigating how he got it," Atlantic County Prosecutor Damon Tyner said.

Tyner says they're also trying to learn if Huggins had help in hiding and moving.

Huggins was charged with the October 2016 murder of Davonte Lee in Bridgeton, N.J.

Authorities found Donovan Nickerson, Raymir Lampkin and Stephine Woodley in Bridgeton on Wednesday, more than nine hours after they fled from the Harborfields Youth Detention Facility in Egg Harbor City, about 36 miles away.

The Atlantic County Sheriff's Office says the four juveniles broke out of the detention center after they overpowered the guard, then drove off in the guard's car, before the eventually sideswiped another car, crashed into a home and fled on foot.

The guard was taken to a hospital and officials say he is expected to be OK.
