Toddler darted into street, then struck and killed by SUV

Tragedy for the family of a toddler, just a month away from his second birthday. He was struck and killed by an SUV in West Philadelphia.

It was a horrifying scene in front of family members who were outside enjoying Sunday evening. In a moment, Ameen Rory escaped his mother's careful watch.

Police say at about 6:45pm, the 23-month-old ran between parked vehicles in the 4800 block of Merion Avenue, and then darted into the street.

That's when he was hit by a Chevrolet TrailBlazer traveling westbound towards 49th Street. The driver -- a 30-year-old woman -- just couldn't stop in time.

The boy was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead after about 30 minutes.

The driver of the SUV remained at the scene. No charges have been filed.

The investigation is ongoing.
