Toddler darted into street, then struck and killed by SUV
WEST PHILADELPHIA (WTXF/AP) - Tragedy for the family of a toddler, just a month away from his second birthday. He was struck and killed by an SUV in West Philadelphia.
It was a horrifying scene in front of family members who were outside enjoying Sunday evening. In a moment, Ameen Rory escaped his mother's careful watch.
Police say at about 6:45pm, the 23-month-old ran between parked vehicles in the 4800 block of Merion Avenue, and then darted into the street.
That's when he was hit by a Chevrolet TrailBlazer traveling westbound towards 49th Street. The driver -- a 30-year-old woman -- just couldn't stop in time.
The boy was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead after about 30 minutes.
The driver of the SUV remained at the scene. No charges have been filed.
The investigation is ongoing.
