Traffic stop leads police to 2,946 baggies of heroin

NEW CASTLE, Del. (WTXF) - A Wilmington man is under arrest after a traffic stop led police to "a large amount" of heroin.

Delaware State Police say two suspicious people had left the DMV building on Hessler Boulevard in New Castle, last Thursday morning.

Soon after, troopers say they stopped the car at the intersection of N. DuPont Highway because the passenger wasn't wearing a seat belt.

That's when they noticed the strong odor of burnt marijuana coming from inside.

Police say they had the driver -- Alexis Valentin, 31, of New Castle -- and the passenger get out while they searched and found "2,946 baggies (approximately 44.19 grams) of heroin packaged for sale in the vehicle's center console and trunk."

The two were taken in.

Valentin was charged with possession of a controlled substance and possession with the intent to distribute a controlled substance. He is being held in lieu of $120,000 cash bail.

The passenger was not charged.
