Two-car collision in Middletown kills one, injures two others

New Castle County officials are investigating a fatal vehicle accident that occurred Saturday afternoon.

The incident occurred just before 3 p.m.

Paramedics in New Castle County responded to the scene of the accident at Summit Bridge Road and Marl Pit Road in Middletown.

Reports indicated a vehicle crash with people trapped in the wreckage.

When officials arrived they reported a collision involving two vehicles and three victims. Two of the victims were still trapped in their separate vehicles.

The victims were rescued from the vehicles in about 40 minutes by fire officials. They used the "jaws of life" to get them out.

A 44-year-old female victim who was trapped in one of the vehicles suffered injuries to her upper and lower extremities, including abrasions, and possible internal injuries. She was treated on scene and transported to Christiana Hospital in critical condition.

A 16-year-old passenger from the same vehicle as the 44-year-old victim was not trapped in the vehicle. She was treated on scene and then transported to Christiana Hospital. Paramedics intercepted the ambulance mid-transport to treat the victim for upper and lower extremity injuries and possible internal injuries.

The final victim, a 66-year-old male driver was trapped inside his vehicle and suffered from fatal injuries. He was pronounced dead on the scene by paramedics.

Delaware State Police are investigating the incident.
