Former Eagles quarterback Nick Foles will be the team’s honorary captain on Sunday when the team takes on the Washington Commanders with a trip to Super Bowl LIX on the line.

Foles, who led the team to their only Super Bowl win in the team’s history, announced the news on socia media Friday.

You can watch the Eagles take on the Commanders at 3 p.m. Sunday on FOX 29.

The backstory:

Foles will return to Lincoln Financial Field on Sunday as an honorary captain, sparking memories of his 2017 NFC Championship win over the Minnesota Vikings.

The Eagles quickly fell behind in that game, allowing the Vikings to score on their opening drive. The Eagles were forced to punt when their offense got on the field.

Then, cornerback Patrick Robinson secured his game-changing interception that was returned for a touchdown.

From there, Foles led the Eagles to an explosive offensive performance to score 31 unanswered points. He threw for more than 300 yards and three touchdowns in that game.

His touchdown passes included a 53-yard toss to Alshon Jeffrey, and a 41-yard dime to Torrey Smith.

What they're saying:

The Eagles shared the honorary captain announcement on their social media with a personal message from Foles.

"There was no other man for the job," the post read.

In the video, Foles announces his return to The Linc and reminisces on his experience with the crowd during the 2017 NFC Championship.

"One of my favorite moments as an Eagle was in the NFC Championship game and the energy the crowd brought," Foles said. "There was nothing ever like it. I never experienced anything like that in my life."

What's next:

The Eagles and Commanders are both scheduled to practice on Friday. All eyes are on the injury report as both teams had key starters miss practice on Thursday.

Eagles center Cam Jurgens has been hampered by a back injury, while tight end Dallas Goedert is battling an ankle injury.

The good news is, quarterback Jalen Hurts and cornerback Quinyon Mitchell were both full participants in Thursday's practice after suffering injuries in last Sunday's Divisional Round matchup with the Los Angeles Rams.

Commanders linebacker Bobby Wagner and defensive tackle Daron Payne both missed Washington's practice on Thursday.
