14-year-old boy struck by train, loses leg in Kensington

A 14-year-old boy was struck by a train near Glenwood Avenue in Kensington.

It happened around 5 p.m. Wednesday. Police say the teenage boy was playing on the tracks when a freight train hit him on the 3600 block of Castor Avenue.

The boy was rushed to St. Christopher's Hospital with a severed leg.

Philadelphia Chief Inspector Scott Small says that the boy is in surgery, with doctors are trying to reattach his leg and stabilize him as best they can.

Police are interviewing an engineer who witnessed what happened from another train.

The Trenton Line was briefly suspended in both directions but is now back on schedule.
