Authorities investigating fatal police shooting in Newark
NEWARK, N.J. (AP) - Prosecutors are investigating a shooting during a police pursuit in New Jersey's largest city in which an officer shot and critically wounded two men, one of whom later died.
Essex County prosecutors say a grand jury will be presented with the case following a review of the 11:30 p.m. Monday shooting in Newark.
Prosecutors say preliminary investigation indicates that Newark police tried to stop a vehicle but the driver didn't stop, and "shots were fired by one police officer at three separate locations," hitting two Newark men in the car.
Prosecutors said 46-year-old driver Gregory Griffin died Tuesday afternoon. Thirty-five-year-old Andrew Dixon was in critical condition at University Hospital. A loaded semi-automatic handgun was found in the vehicle.
Prosecutors say their professional standards bureau will review the evidence carefully.
