Boy, dog hit by car, killed in Westland

An 11-year-old boy was trying to save the life of his dog when they were both hit and killed by oncoming traffic.

Westland Police shut down Wayne Road between Melton and Hazelwood for hours to investigate.

Police say the boy, now identified at Gage Carter, chased the dog into traffic around 7 p.m. Saturday.

No information was released about the driver or drivers of the vehicles who hit the victim and his dog. Police say alcohol was not a factor.

A gofundme has been set up to assist the family, with a fundraising goal of $10,000.
