City Plans For Marathon Safety

With the annual Philadelphia Marathon scheduled for this weekend, the leaders of the city and the marathon held a press conference Tuesday to lay out safety procedures for the event, in light of last week's Paris attacks.

The event will include road closures at various points around the course, including the Benjamin Franklin Parkway and I-676 off-ramps.

"Following last week's tragic events in Paris, we have received questions from runners and members of the public regarding security measures for our race this weekend," Desire Peterkin-Bell, the marathon's race director, said in a statement. "The safety of our runners, spectators and staff has always been a top priority for the GORE-TEX Philadelphia Marathon.

Peterkin-Bell added that the Marathon adopted new procedures following the Boston Marathon bombing in 2013, which will continue, along with "enhanced security features that are not visible and cannot be shared with the public."
