Del. police officer arrested after barricade situation
WILMINGTON, Del. (AP) -- Authorities say a Delaware police officer was arrested after barricading himself in his home and shooting a gun in the direction of neighboring houses.
New Castle County Police say 48-year-old Michael Ballard, a Wilmington police officer, surrendered Friday after a standoff that began Thursday night when police were called to check on his welfare.
Ballard was taken to a local hospital for an evaluation. He is charged with reckless endangering, possession of a firearm during commission of a felony, and possession of a firearm by a person prohibited.
It's not clear whether Ballard has a lawyer.
Wilmington Police say Ballard, a 14-year veteran, has been on administrative leave. He has now been suspended without pay.
