Elderly woman stabbed by son as barricade situation developed in North Philadelphia: police

A scary situation unfolded in a North Philadelphia apartment Sunday morning that ended with a 77-year-old woman injured, and her son in custody.

Officers responded to reports of a man armed with a knife on the 1200 block of Fairmount Avenue around 9:30 a.m.

What we know:

Police say it was determined that the elderly woman was stabbed in the shoulder by the man, her 54-year-old son, who refused to leave the apartment.

A barricade situation was declared, and the suspect was taken into custody a short time later. He was taken to a local hospital for minor injuries.

The woman was also treated at a local hospital, where she is said to be in stable condition.

The knife used in the stabbing was also recovered, according to police.

What we don't know:

Police have yet to release any information about a possible motive or any charges against the suspect. An investigation is underway.
