Explosion and fire in West Philadelphia apartment building injures 1

Police in West Philadelphia are investigating a fire and explosion at an apartment building.

According to authorities, a four-story apartment building was rocked Saturday night about 11:45, on the 200 block of South 49th Street.

Officials say one person was allegedly mixing gun powder and dynamite, causing the blast. Police blocked 48th and Spruce Streets while fire crews worked to extinguish the fire. The building was evacuated for a time. A SEPTA bus was brought to the scene for residents to take shelter in.

Police say one person was taken into custody in connection with the explosion.

One person was transported to Penn Presbyterian and is in stable condition.
