Family: Missing veteran's body found in Hawaii after he went for hike on honeymoon
MAUI, Hawaii - The body of a veteran from Montgomery County has been located in Hawaii after he went missing while on his honeymoon, his family told FOX 5.
Maui police said 27-year-old Stephen Kramar was reported missing on Monday. Investigators said he left the Wavecrest Resort in Kaunakakai, Molokai to go on a hike but never returned.
A GoFundMe page set up to help the family said Stephen Kramar, a U.S. Navy veteran from Gaithersburg, was scouting an area to make sure it was safe to take his new wife Jeffanie Kramar with him. His wife told FOX 5's Lauren DeMarco he told her he'd be home by 6 p.m. for dinner but never came back.
"He's a very avid hiker. He's hiked 14,000-foot mountains," Jeffanie Kramar told FOX 5 before learning of her husband's death. "He's very extreme, but he knows what he's doing. He was in the military. He served in the Navy for almost three years so he's trained and experienced."
Jeffanie Kramar told FOX 5 he called her at noon to check-in and texted at about 2:30 p.m., but she never heard from him again. She said they planned to move to McLean when they returned from their two-weeklong honeymoon.
Police, rescue teams and volunteers scoured the island looking for him and Maui police reported that he had been located, but would not confirm his condition. Stephen Kramar's family confirmed to FOX 5 that he was found dead.
Anyone with information that aid detectives in their investigation was urged to call (808) 244-6400.
