Firefighter injured in Wilmington blaze to be released from the hospital

Officials announced that one of the Wilmington firefighters that were injured in a deadly fire in September will be released from the hospital Thursday.

Senior Firefighter Ardythe Hope remains in the hospital since the blaze. Chief Goode said on Twitter that as they prepare to take Firefighter Speakman home their prayers remain with Hope's family.

Crews responded to a fire on the 1900 block of Lakeview Road back in September. When they arrived, a report of heavy fire was transmitted and additional crews were dispatched.

At 3:14 a.m., crews declared a "Mayday" and additional crews were directed to assist the firefighters that were trapped.

According to officials, firefighters were on the first floor of the home when the floor collapsed, trapping them in the basement. Multiple units attempted search and rescue for the trapped firefighters.

Lt. Christopher Leach and Senior Firefighter Jerry Fickes were killed in the blaze.
