Freak accident leaves 7-year-old girl in coma

Salt Lake City, UT-A freak accident during a shopping trip with her parents left a 7-year-old girl in a coma after a refrigerator fell on top of her.

"I'd do anything to protect her. Stop it if I could," said Juvia's dad, Jonathan Suarez.

But he never got the chance. Now he fights to hold back tears. His wife and three children were shopping at an appliance store in Salt Lake City last week when he heard a bang.

He says his 7-year-old daughter Juvia lay trapped underneath a refrigerator that had toppled over. Suarez somehow muscled the 500 pound appliance off his daughter.

In the past 6 days, her father and family have barely left her side, but doctors tell them it could be months if Juvia is able to ever leave. However, she's showing signs of improvement.

"She squeezes your hand, the nurses say if you're talking she can hear you," her father explained.

News that surprises the Suarez family lawyer.

"I have been practicing law for 38 years and I have never seen an injury like this where someone survives or could survive," the family's attorney Richard Patterson said.

He says the family has questions for the store owner. A visibly saddened and shaken owner told a local news station he couldn't comment.

But Patterson says they'll be reaching out to them soon as well.

"We will seek and opportunity to resolve this matter with them and their insurance carriers," he explained.

A GoFundMe page has been setup to help with medical expenses.
