Hikers rescue dog trapped in abandoned mine shaft

Three hikers came to the rescue when they came across a dog trapped in an abandoned mine shaft near Fairplay, Colorado.

Portia Scovern shared a video of the rescue and follow-up care showing the underweight and dehydrated pup on October 18 after surviving a 20-foot fall.

Scovern wrote her boyfriend had been hiking a week before the rescue and heard something from the cave, but continued on his hike. When the hikers returned, the dog barked, which alerted the group to her existence. They shimmied into the shaft and rescued the dog.

Through the power of social media, the hikers were able to connect with the dog's owner following the rescue.

According to reports, the dog had gone missing on October 4.
