Local Fundraiser Held for Injured Secret Service Agent
PHILADELPHIA (WTXF) A Philadelphia CrossFit gym is raising money for a local hero, injured Secret Service agent Garrett FitzGerald.
A onetime member of Hillary Clinton's security detail, FitzGerald, 31, was paralyzed from the chest down after sustaining major spinal cord injuries in a car accident back in December. The accident was caused when another vehicle allegedly crossed the divide, resulting in a head on collision that caused one fatality and numerous injuries.
The accident happened just a couple of months before FitzGerald was set to marry his then fiancee Joan Lyall. The couple has since been married and they are looking for some financial support to help them through the intense rehabilitation that lies ahead for Garrett. A GoFundMe page has been set up by a friend of the couple, Rob Freed, and has raised over $250,000.
Crossfit215 was Garrett's local gym and they are looking to do even more to help the pair. With a $31 suggested donation at the door, and a raffle and prizes, the gym is hoping to help the couple any way they can. In addition, they will be taking part in Ability Workout of the Day, which is an initiative that gives people with disabilities access to recreation, in order to show their support.
Garrett is known by his friends at Crossfit215 as a very inspirational and charismatic person. His story has touched many people, and more information about him can be found on his GoFundMe page. Additionally, information about this fundraising event can be found on Facebook.
