Male Suspects in Assault of Gay Couple Plead Guilty, Female Suspect Will go to Trial

PHILADELPHIA (WTXF) - PHILADELPHIA (AP) -- Two men accused of beating a gay couple on a Philadelphia street last year must stay out of downtown under a plea agreement sparing them from jail.

Philip Williams and Kevin Harrigan apologized as they pleaded guilty Thursday to aggravated assault and conspiracy charges.

A third suspect, Kathryn Knott, said she'll go to trial.

One accuser said Harrigan used slurs to ask if he and his partner were gay. Zachary Hesse said he was then punched in the face. Andy Haught had a broken jaw and cheekbones.

The 24-year-old Williams and 26-year-old Harrigan say the attack wasn't motivated by sexual orientation.

Williams is banned from downtown while on probation for 5 years. Harrigan's ban is 3 years. They perform 200 hours of community service at an LGBT facility.
