Man arrested in hit-and-run that left 1 dead, 1 injured

Police say a man is under arrest in connection with a hit-and-run that left one man injured and another dead in the city's Fairhill neighborhood.

It happened shortly before 11:30 a.m. Thursday at 2 nd Street and Allegheny Avenue.

According to police, a 2003 Toyota Corolla, allegedly driven by 25-year-old Kenneth Bauer Jr., was traveling westbound on Allegheny Avenue and proceeded through the intersection, striking the pedestrian. Police say he then fled the scene. A 36-year-old man driving a Kia Optima observed the accident and followed the car, according to police.

Investigators say the Kia cut in front of Bauer Jr. on the 300 block of W. Allegheny Avenue, at which time Bauer Jr. then struck the rear bumper of the Kia. According to police, the driver of the Kia exited his vehicle and began banging on the window of the Toyota in attempt to get the driver to exit his vehicle. Police say the Toyota then reversed across Allegheny Avenue striking the rear bumper of an unattended parked car.

According to police, the Toyota then drove through the fence of a construction site where it came to a stop. Police say Bauer Jr. was taken into custody without incident. The pedestrian, 60-year-old Domingo Agosto-Mendez, was transported to Temple Hospital by where he subsequently succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at 10:44 p.m. Police say the 36-year-old man in the Kia suffered a minor knee injury.
