Man charged in SEPTA sex assault of teenager at Center City station

CENTER CITY (WTXF) - Authorities have charged 23-year-old David Smith in connection with a sexual assault at the City Hall Station Tuesday night.

The incident happened shortly before 10 p.m. on the southbound platform of the station.

Police say Smith approached the 17-year-old victim from behind and drew a gun from his waistband. The suspect then grabbed the victim and forced himself on her, performing a sexual act.

Smith then fled the scene. Police received a call from the victim and officers responded to the scene.

Smith has been charged with rape, sexual assault and multiple firearms violations. He is being held on a $1 million bond.

The Philadelphia Police Special Victim's Unit is leading the investigation with the help of SEPTA police.
