Man critical after being shot while walking mom's dog in North Philly

Police are investigating after a man walking his mother's dog in North Philadelphia was shot Monday night.

Celeste Smith says she tried to console her grief-stricken neighbor early Tuesday morning after the woman's son was shot in the neck at 7th and Wallace just after 10:30 Monday night. The 54-year-old, who lives in Upper Darby, was just out walking his mom's dog.

"When police pulled up on the scene, the victim was laying on the sidewalk completely unresponsive and next to him on the leash was the dog," Philadelphia Police Department Chief Inspector Scott Small said.

The victim was transported to Hahnemann University Hospital where he is listed in critical condition.

Police returned the small dog to the victim's heartbroken mom who her friends says was on the verge of collapse.

"She was just so distraught," Smith said.

The longtime neighbor says the victim grew up here is a good son from a nice family. She is concerned the shootings are out of hand.

Philadelphia police say real-time crime cameras right overhead captured some of the incident, but aren't saying what is on the recordings as they continue to investigate.

Neighbors want justice and are hoping for the best for the victim.
