Memorial Day weekend at Penn's Landing
PHILADELPHIA (WTXF) Penn's Landing is packed with people ready to kick off Memorial Day weekend the unofficial start to summer and who better to do it than Philly's own DJ Jazzy Jeff.
He drew a huge crowd at the Riverfront roller rink to kick off the Blue Cross Summerfest. A big even for people who want to stay in the city for the holiday weekend.
"We are Philadelphia's urban beach. You do not have to go to the shore. Philadelphia has its own shore," said Jodi Milkman with the Delaware Valley Riverfront Corporation.
There's outdoor skating of course but new this year and debuting Memorial Day weekend is Chickie's and Pete's Crab Shack for a taste of the shore here at home.
There are beach chairs all around and fun activities like mini golf.
"We have this brand new golf course and every hole is designed by a different local Philadelphia artist," said Milkman.
Also along the riverfront is Spruce Street Harbor.
"We try to avoid the traffic down the shore yeah," said Sherly Dalfonso. It's the perfect getaway for her children who wanted a fun but stress free weekend.
"It's nice weather. It's just a cool place to hang out. The kids enjoy that," said Dalfonso.
Nadirah Adams, her son and two cousins are taking in all Spruce Street Harbor has to offer.
"They were in the water first, then the claymations where you make something out of clay and you could relax as an adult," said Adams.
Add in the hammocks, plenty of food, drinks and to get your water fix in the city there are paddle boats and water taxis.
It's a full day.
"That's the good thing. There's a lot to do in the city this weekend."
