Methacton students return to class after work stoppage
EAGLEVILLE, Pa. (WTXF) - Thousands of students are heading back to school in Montgomery County Friday following a three-day strike at Methacton School District.
While a deal hasn't been reached between the teacher's union and the district, non-binding arbitration is underway which means teachers are back to work and students are back to school.
Teachers from the Methacton Education Association went on strike on Monday after failing to strike a deal with the school district Sunday night, meaning students have been out of school all week.
Union representatives say the school board wants teachers to pay a greater share of health care premiums. Teachers said they could not accept the offer without a corresponding salary increase.
The strike happened just a few weeks into the school year which frustrated some parents, but teachers argue that their pay is well below the county average and they're frustrated too.
The school district and teachers union mutually agreed to enter into an arbitration agreement Wednesday night.
Schools were closed for the Jewish holiday of Rosh Hashanah Thursday.
