Murphy vetoes bill imposing 5-cent fee on plastic bags

TRENTON, N.J. (AP) -- New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy has vetoed legislation imposing a five-cent fee on plastic carry-out bags.

The Democratic governor announced the veto Monday. He says the fee doesn't go far enough to reduce the prevalence of plastic bags that can mar the state's shoreline and clog city sewers.

Lawmakers said at a hearing last week on the issue that they plan to re-examine the issue.

Environmental groups hailed Murphy's decision, saying they hope it leads to an outright ban on the plastic containers.
