New Concerns Over Building Destroyed in Fire in Center City
PHILADELPHIA (WTXF) - There are new concerns over the safety after build that was destroyed by fire.
Tuesday night's four alarm fire gutted a building on the corner of Locust Street and Van Pelt.
Officials say 22 apartments were destroyed, while Philadelphia Licenses and inspections are monitoring the scene.
L&I says the scene poses an imminent danger, and crews have already begun demolition at certain parts of the site.
The winter storm this weekend will also raise new concerns, according to officials.
"With the snow coming this weekend we want to be extra cautious with this building because of the additional load that the snow will place on the remaining internal structure so we will start a demolition from the roofline down. We are hoping that we can save a majority of this building," said L&I Commissioner David Perri.
The fire is also forcing people out of apartments in the building next store.
Roads in the area are still closed, until crews removed parts of the building that are in danger of falling.
