NYPD searching for Times Square gunman

NEW YORK (FOX5NY) - Police in New York City are hunting for a man who gunned down another man on 7th Avenue in the heart of Times Square.

The shooting happened just before 4 a.m. near Tonic bar and Lace strip club between 48th and 49th Streets on 7th Avenue.

A witness told Fox 5 News that she is a nursing student and that she tried to give the wounded man CPR.

After a 911 call, rescue personnel found the 33-year-old victim with a gunshot wound to the head. Medics rushed the man--identified as Perseus Salichs--to Bellevue Hospital but it was too late to save him.

The shooter ran from the scene after the violence. He is described as a Hispanic man, about 5 feet 9 inches tall, with a thin build. He was wearing a black jacket and a black skull cap and was last seen running north on 7th Avenue.

"A lot of panic, obviously, people just didn't know what to do... a lot of crying," a witness said.

Salichs lived in the Frederick Douglass Houses on the Upper West Side. Sources told Fox 5 that the father of three was at the bar for a holiday party.

Police are looking into whether a dispute escalated into violence, which happened right after "last call" at Tonic, a popular nightclub.

Friends who knew the victim were seen comforting each other after talking to police at the scene.
