Officer accidentally shoots colleague while responding to burglary

Monday night a resident in the Gresham Park neighborhood, just outside of Atlanta, called 9-1-1 to report a possible burglary in progress. The caller gave a physical description of the home, and where it was taking place.

Police responded to a house matching the caller's description, but it turned out to be the wrong home.

When officers got no response from the occupants, they entered from an unlocked back door into the kitchen where they encountered the family dog. Officers shot and killed the dog, and then shot a man seen exiting the room off the kitchen.

The man turned out to be the homeowner- he was treated and released.

One of the responding officers remains hospitalized in serious, but stable condition after sustaining a gunshot wound to the hip.

The preliminary investigation suggests the injured cop was likely shot accidentally by one of the other officers at the scene.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has been called in to conduct an independent probe into exactly what went wrong.
