Officers talk about rescuing man from fiery crash on I-95 in Florida

EDGEWATER, Fla. (FOX 35 WOFL) - Volusia County deputies and Edgewater police officers jumped into action after a fiery crash on Wednesday.

Officers were right there when the crash happened and they rushed to rescue him.

The crash happened just before 1 a.m. on Wednesday. A 23-year-old man driving the wrong-way on Interstate 95 fatally struck another car head-on two miles past mile marker 242. The car struck by the one-way driver briefly caught fire and authorities on scene had to work together to get the man out.

Body camera video shows a Volusia County Sheriff's deputy and an Edgewater police officer attempting to get the man out of the burning vehicle. They are forced to use a glass breaker to smash the passenger side window open. They then used an axe to break off the door. Finally, they are seen slicing open a side airbag with a knife, trying to get to the trapped driver. Eventually, they get him out successfully.

The driver of the wrong-way crash died. The 22-year-old man pulled form the burning vehicle is still at the Orlando Regional Medical Center.

I-95 in Edgewater was shut down for 12 hours while crews fixed the road.
