Officials: 911 service restored in Philadelphia

The City of Philadelphia has restored 911 service to landlines, officials announced Tuesday.

Residents were previously urged to use a cellphone for any 911 calls after outages were reported.

Verizon officials say a manhole fire in Philadelphia caused significant damage to numerous fiber and copper cables, leading to the outage. The company will continue to make repairs to underground wiring.

According to Philadelphia's Office of Innovation and Technology, 70 to 80 percent of 911 calls come from cellphones.
