Overnight explosion means fewer trains through Elizabeth to NY

ELIZABETH, N.J. (WTXF/AP) - Rail travel to and from New York was shut down after a device found in a backpack at Elizabeth's train station exploded while a bomb squad robot was attempting to disarm it.

New Jersey Transit says Northeast Corridor and North Jersey Coast Line trains began rolling at 5:30am Monday. However passengers should expect crowds and delays. Port Authority Trans-Hudson (PATH) trains, ferries and buses are honoring those rail tickets.

However, there are still issues taking Amtrak.

According to Amtrak, "Service was suspended Sunday evening due to police activity near the Elizabeth, NJ station and passengers should be prepared for the possibility of additional cancellations and delays throughout the day Monday."

FOX 29's Bob Kelly points out travelers heading the opposite direction -- south of Philadelphia -- could also be affected.

Mayor Christian Bollwage said two men reported seeing wires and a pipe coming out of a package in a bag in a trash can.

There turned out to be five devices. Shortly after 12:30am, one exploded as a bomb squad used a robot to try to disarm it. No injuries were reported.
