Police: 2-year old Olney boy dies after gunshot wound to the head
OLNEY (WTXF) - Police say a 2-year-old boy has died after suffering a gunshot wound to the head.
The child died at the hospital. Tharp says she doesn't know the family personally but would see the boy with them walking to the store.
"There was a couple times when he would be outside and my daughter was outside. She's 2 too so we had her on the four wheeler and he would like try to get on. He was very playful and just knowing it happened to him it's painful," said Tharp.
It happened around 2 p.m. Thursday afternoon. They say the boy's father showed up and drove him to Einstein where he died soon after. Investigators say several people including the child's mother were inside the house when it happened.
"It's unclear exactly what happened. Presumably it was some an accidental gun shot or some sort of reckless gun play with somebody inside the house," said Captain John Ryan with Philadelphia Police Homicide Unit.
Police drove the mother to the hospital but say soon after they brought both parents to Police Headquarters to be interviewed by homicide detectives. Grieving family members stopped by the house all evening looking for answers but were met by police guarding the door. What has happened to this little boy has saddened the neighborhood.
"It's crazy. It's getting out of control," said Tanya Jordan. Her friend Deborah Coleman said, "That's sad. It's really upsetting. They really just need to take all the guns in the world and get rid of them. Stop making them. Every week it's something about guns."
Police say they found the gun used in the shooting.
They believe it's accidental/self-inflicted but are still interviewing the child's parents to confirm.
Friday morning, Philadelphia Police Commissioner Rihcard Ross explained that the district attorney would be deciding whether or not anyone would face charges in the incident.
