Police: 3-year-old boy struck in North Philadelphia hit-and-run

Police are searching for a driver after a 3-year-old boy was struck in a hit-and-run on the 2400 block of Reese Street in North Philadelphia.

It happened around 7 p.m. Wednesday

According to police, they got several 911 calls about the accident. When they got there the 3-year-old boy was in the street going in and out of consciousness. Officers rushed him to St. Christopher's Hospital for Children. They say he has head injuries and possibly some brain damage. He's in critical condition. Witnesses say the driver got out of a burgundy Dodge Caravan Sport Mini but then took off.

"From witnesses the mini-van actually ran the little boy over. The driver stopped, got out of the mini- van, looked at the child laying on the street and had some words with neighbors then got back in the mini-van and left the scene," said Chief Inspector Scott Small.

It's unclear what the man may have said to neighbors. Police say they traced the van's license plate to a house nearby. They don't believe the driver is the person who owns the vehicle. They're not releasing the license plate number because they say they know who they're looking for.

Police and accident investigators are still combing the scene at this hour.
